Horizon Lines Delivers For PGA Puerto Rico Open

CHARLOTTE, NC. (March 25, 2008) – Well before the first drive left the tee on Thursday, preparations for the Puerto Rico Open were in full swing. As a founding sponsor, Horizon Lines, Inc. (NYSE:HRZ) moved tents, leader boards, bleachers, catering equipment and golf clubs from across the U.S. to San Juan on behalf of the host organization, the Puerto Rico Golf Association.
The first-ever PGA TOUR tournament in Puerto Rico was a resounding success by all accounts. Journeyman golfer Greg Kraft got his first official TOUR win at the tournament on Sunday with a score of 14 under par at the Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande, just outside San Juan.
"Our expectations for the event were exceeded by far," said Matt Truax, Operations Manager for the Puerto Rico Open. "One of the top concerns coming in was the logistics of the whole thing, moving the PGA TOUR to a new tournament location offshore. Everything went off without a hitch."
Preparations for the event began over a year ago. Sidney Wolf, President of the Puerto Rico Golf Association, was instrumental in attracting the PGA TOUR to Puerto Rico. He approached Horizon Lines early on as a founding sponsor to ensure that logistics for the event would be handled seamlessly.
Working together, Horizon's domestic ocean shipping division and its new logistics company developed an integrated transportation management program to handle booking, transportation and delivery of all materials needed to stage the tournament. Horizon associates worked directly with Global Golf Management Inc., the PGA's event development partner.
